Mrs. Virginia Johnston Matters, (87), the beloved wife of her late husband Edward J. Matters, passed away following a long battle with Alzheimers disease. A former resident of Massapequa Park, she was born in Queens, New York, daughter of the late Francis and Kathleen Kaine Johnston.
A loving mother and grandmother, Mrs. Matters is survived by two sons, Michael Matters, and wife Peggy of Southington, CT; James Matters, and wife Barbara of Huntersville, NC; two daughters, Loretta Matters, and Doreen Matters-Wilson, and husband Brian all of Hillsborough, NC. Virginia leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Steven Matters, of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Christine Matters-Adduci, and husband Jason of Meriden, CT; Thomas Matters of Southington, CT; Lily Wilson of Hillsborough, NC and great-grandchild, Carter Matters of Avon, CT; her sister, Kathleen Brennan of Boynton Beach, FL and sister-in-law, Audrey Wittekind of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
While living in Massapequa Park, Virginia and her husband Edward were faithful parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Church where both served as respective presidents of the Rosary Society, and Holy Name Society. Virginia helped to establish the Pequa Belles, a small group of caring women who provided charitable donations to needy residents in the local area. Long known for her love of chocolate, Virginia made sure to pass along her sweetness to all whose lives she touched.
The family will receive friends, Thursday evening, October 1st, from 6 to 8pm at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home, 3863 Merrick Rd., Seaford, NY. A funeral mass will be held Friday morning, October 2nd, at 9:30am at Our Lady of Lourdes in Massapequa Park, NY. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Pinelawn, NY.
