Ruth Fezza, 91, longtime resident of Massapequa, NY passed away on September 30, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ruth was born in Manhattan, NY on February 23, 1934, the daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Appel) Fitchett. Ruth grew up in Richmond Hill, NY.
Ruth was an athlete. In her youth, she was a dancer and competitive roller skater. It was through skating that she met her late husband of 59 years, Bernie. While raising her family of 4 children, she joined the PTA bowling league, and a new passion was discovered. Ruth bowled for many years in various leagues and took regular trips to regional and national tournaments with her bowling friends.
She and Bernie loved cruises. Over her lifetime they managed to visit numerous countries and always came home with wonderful tales to tell. Ruth was also an enthusiastic sports fan. She could rattle off stats about her Mets and Jets, and you could hear her cheers and critiques about players’ performances throughout the house. Ruth also enjoyed gardening, and her green thumb was evident everywhere.
Playing games and doing puzzles was always something Ruth excelled at. In her later years, it was not unusual to see her sitting at a table with her great grandchildren playing Uno or putting together a puzzle. Until the end, she could still out do you at Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
Ruth is survived by her brother, William Fitchett, four children: Jennifer Volchko, Philip Fezza, Liz (Michael) DeLuca, Bernice (Michael) Burns; nine grandchildren: Nicholas (Jessica) Volchko, Michael John (Tiffany) Burns, Ciara (Chris) Staehlin, Alissa (Tyler) Wendelken, Samantha (Manny) Fezza-Valle, Selina Fezza, Christina DeLuca, Joseph Fezza, and Daria Burns. To her nine great grandchildren Ruth was known as GiGi: Zachary, Zander, Emma, Zane, Zoe, Parker, Brynley, Athena, and Selene.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in the name of Skylin Ruth Burns, her great granddaughter who preceded her in death.
