Roland H. Merton, of Massapequa, NY died October 14, 2023 at the age of 97, following a brief illness.
Mr. Merton was born Roland Harold Moser on July 8, 1926 to Dr. Ernst Moser and Dr. Marianne Bathe in Berlin, Germany. After surviving the holocaust, he studied law at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Mr. Merton emigrated to NY in February 1954, joining his mother, his sister, and her family, who had settled in Massapequa, Long Island. In 1964 he married his loving wife, Anke Merton (nee Salz). As a young couple, they purchased their home in Massapequa, where they raised their family and remained until his final days. He worked in banking before retiring from Dresdner Bank-NY in March 1989. Mr. Merton was an avid traveler. Nothing gave him greater joy than planning his next trip. He was a voracious reader, reading the New York Times daily and always looking for a new book for his extensive personal library. He shared his love for music with his friends and family through his regular attendance at the Metropolitan Opera.
In addition to his loving wife Anke, he is survived by his dear daughters Vivian Merton Vazeos, Stephanie M. Dahlquist and her husband David Dahlquist; grandchildren Nicole G. Dahlquist, Konstantinos M. Vazeos, Anna M. Vazeos and Natalie E. Dahlquist. Also survived by his brother- and sister-in-law Dirk and Judy Salz; nieces and nephews H. Steven Dittrich, Karin Diane LeViness, Christopher Salz and Bettina Forssman; and former son-in-law Demetrios Vazeos.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Merton’s name may be made to the Metropolitan Opera or Congregation Habonim
