Patrick Joseph Carney, born May 13, 1943 in County Mayo, Ireland passed peacefully after a brief illness on November 7, 2025. He was the son of Peter and Kathleen (nee Molloy) Carney.
Patrick was the beloved husband of Mary (nee Costello) with whom he shared over sixty years of marriage. Cherished father of Brian and Peter and father-in-law of Dora (nee Martinez) Carney and Steven Terrezza. He was the proud grandfather of Ryan, Keith and Landin. Loving brother of Teresa (Billy) Tully,Noreen (John) Madden, Kitty Mellett, Bernadette Dunne, Luke (Kathleen) Carney, Dympna (Basil) Hudson, and Helen (William) McHugh. Patrick is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Patrick was predeceased by his beloved son, Patrick J. Carney Jr., of whom he was immensely proud- for the loving family he built, his distinguished career as a New York City Police Captain for more than twenty years, and his second career as an attorney following his retirement from the force. He was also predeceased by his dear brothers, Peter Carney Jr. and Mattie Carney, whose memory he cherished, along with his brothers-in-laws Patrick Mellett and Cyril Dunne.
Born in Ireland, he emigrated to the United States at the age of 20, building a life grounded in hard work, faith, and family. Though separated by distance, Patrick remained deeply devoted to his mother and siblings in Ireland, keeping close ties through calls, letters and visits. He shared a special bond with his sister Teresa, who already in New York, helped him find his footing and navigate life in a new country when he first arrived. Patrick shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and partnership with his wife Mary from County Cavin, Ireland. Together they raised their children, who were the pride of his life, and in later years, Patrick found immeasurable joy in his grandchildren, who brought out his gentlest and happiest spirit.
He worked faithfully as a doorman and concierge for 46 years, greeting countless people with his goodness and respect. Patrick approached life’s ups and downs with a remarkable sense of perseverance—something he in part learned as a long-suffering Mets fan. He met challenges head-on, always finding a way forward, even when patience wasn’t his strongest virtue or when his sense of direction behind the wheel led to a few memorable detours. A lifelong dog lover, he found constant companionship and happiness in the family’s three beloved dogs over the years, each one a loyal friend who reflected his own warmth and affection. He also took great pride in his home, spending many happy hours on painting projects and tending to his lawn.
Patrick was a lifelong Catholic and man of deep faith. To his loved ones and friends alike, he will be remembered as a kind, honorable man whose quiet strength, devotion, and generous spirit made the world a better place.
