May Walsleben, 92, of Seaford, New York, passed away on November 17, 2021 in her home of the last 66 years.
May was born in Kingston, NY on August 7, 1929 to the late Mary Dargan Kursheedt and Albert Kursheedt. Her mother died shortly after her birth and she was raised by her maternal grandparents, Marie and James Dargan. She grew up in Merrick, NY and graduated in 1947 from Mepham High School in Bellmore, NY. May then attended Trinity College in Washington DC, graduating in 1951 with a degree in History. After graduation she worked as a librarian at Adelphi College, facilitating her lifelong love of books and reading.
While in college she met the love of her life, Edward James Walsleben, who was attending The Catholic University of America. Ed was from Hempstead, NY and the two were married on September 25, 1954. May and Ed raised their five children on Franklin Avenue in Seaford, with a large extended family of LI-based Walsleben in-laws, siblings, and cousins. Family gatherings and picnics were the norm, and May loved to share the wonders of her children and grandchildren. May was active in St. William the Abbot Catholic Church, teaching CCD and bible studies. May and Ed share a lifelong love affair with the Berkshire region of Massachusetts, spending many happy years in their retreat on the Green River.
May is survived by her devoted husband Ed. She is also survived by her 5 children: William (Shirley), James (Amy), Justin (Elizabeth), Jessica Sorkin (Ira) and Nancy Singler (Robert). She is the cherished grandmother of 12 grandchildren: Kaitlin Walsleben, Brendan Walsleben, Michael (Noelle) Sorkin, Kurt Walsleben, Kristen (Peter) Bross, Ryan Sorkin, Kevin, Andrew, Robert, Mary Elizabeth (Patrick) Clancy, Thomas, and Christiana, and the adored great grandmother of 2 great grandchildren: Sophia, and Michael. Mass of Christian Burial Monday, November 22, 2021, 9:30 AM at St. William the Abbot RC Church, Seaford. Interment to follow at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury.
