Maria Concetta Vangeli Di Carlo of Wantagh, NY passed in her sleep on March 7, 2022. She was born to Domenico and Marianna Vangeli, in Scaliti, Italy on May 13, 1921. She was predeceased by her husband Peter Di Carlo of 47 years and is survived by her five children Anthony (Maria), Dominick (Annette), Frank (Linda), Anna Keller (Thomas), and Peter Jr (Mary). She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren which she loved dearly. Maria was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother as her family was the center of her life. Her home was a place where family and friends gathered for good food and wine, and great company. She routinely orchestrated countless feasts on Sunday afternoons and over holidays for family and friends.
A devout Catholic, Maria not only attended mass daily, she was a believer in the power of prayer and the Holy Rosary. She also closely followed the teachings of Santo Padre Pio. A woman of great strength and courage, Maria lived through bombings to her hometown in southern Italy during WWII and immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1963, when she brought her four older children with her on an eight day voyage to reunite with her husband and start a new life for her and her family.
Maria was a great caretaker. Throughout her life she cared for the people in her life who couldn’t care for themselves. From her aging parents and in-laws in Italy, to her husband after he became ill late in his life. She was a great neighbor as well, caring for several friends too sick to live on their own. With only three years of formal education, Maria became a successful seamstress and tailor. She loved her beautiful garden of flowers and vegetables, and made countless scarves hats, blankets and sweaters for family and friends through many years of knitting and crocheting. She also used her crocheting talents to make hats for cancer patients.
