John P. Lynch, an advocate for the blind and visually impaired, died December 10, 2012, at his home in Seaford, NY, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He was 62.

Although he was born and died in Nassau County, the most defining moments of his life were determined internationally. His stint as a Peace Corps volunteer at the National Institutue for the Blind in Bogota, Colombia in the 1970's provided him with a clear career direction. He made his greatest contributions as champion and innovator of community-based services for the blind and visually impaired while Executive Director of Helen Keller Services for the Blind, an agency with offices in the New York metropolitan area as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties. During his tenure of twenty-four years at the agency, he oversaw and managed all education and rehabilitation programs for the blind or visually impaired, coordinated all aspects of vocational rehabilitation services, and provided orientation and mobility instruction.

Earlier in his career, he worked with Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind, the Virginia Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and Perkins School for the Blind.

He received a Master of Business Administration from Long Island University, CW Post Campus; a Master of Education from Boston College; a diploma in Social Development from Coady International Institute (Canada); and a Bachelor of Arts from Mount St. Mary's College.

In addition to his wife and sons he is survived by eight siblings; Dennis, William, Maureen Pacuska, Rosemary Desimone, Patricia Angeles, Jane Plantz, Margaret Lynch and Lenore MacNeil.

His funeral will take place on Thursday, December 13, at 10 AM at St. William the Abbot Church in Seaford and interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
