John "Jack" J. Dwyer, Jr.

August 17, 1930 — March 3, 2022

Farmingdale

John J. (Jack) Dwyer, Jr., passed away peacefully on March 3, 2022 at the age of 91 due to natural complications of a long, well-lived life.

He was born in 1930 to John J. Dwyer Sr. and Lydia K. (Dippold) Dwyer.  He and his sister, Eileen C. Dwyer were raised in Richmond Hill and Ocean Beach, NY, and attended Holy Child Jesus Grammar School, Richmond Hill, NY.  Jack went on to attend Regis High School in Manhattan and Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, where he earned a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1952.  Drafted into the Army, he served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps at Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD.  He then attended Penn State University, School of Mineral Industries, State College, PA.  There he met his wife of 65 years, Nancy E. (Snyder) Dwyer from Reading, PA.

Living for short periods in Forest Hills and Canarsie, they moved to Valley Stream in 1960 where together they raised five children, Stephen, Eileen (Larsen), Daniel, Patricia (Johnston), and Kevin.  All attended St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic School, where Jack was a long-time parishioner.  All are married, respectively, to Dalva, Louis, Nelda, Colin, and Mindy.  Jack had 9 Grandchildren, 14 Great-grandchildren, and 1 Great-great-grandchild.

An engineer by training, he was blessed with the rare ability to write well.  He started working for McGraw-Hill Inc. in Manhattan as a reporter, then senior manager and chief editor positions on three technical/business magazines - American Machinist, Fleet Owner, and 33.  He traveled to Japan, India, Germany, France, England, Italy and Brazil to report on business and technology.  As McGraw-Hill went through various business changes, he worked for FM Business Publications and as an independent contractor, finally retiring in 1999.

Retirement opened up new worlds for him.  He had started running earlier, which he continued. He ran in the NYC Marathon, Long Island Marathons, and many local races earning numerous trophies and medals.  He was a member of the Greater Long Island Running Club and the New York Road Runners Club.

He became involved in numerous charitable organizations.  As a member of the Volunteer Society of St. Vincent de Paul, he visited the ill in hospitals.  He and Nancy were members of the Teams of our Lady married couples group and the Ignatian Volunteer Corps.  As a volunteer at Our Lady of Loretto Parish Outreach, Hempstead, NY, he collected and distributed food to those that needed assistance.  He preached at churches throughout Long Island about the Rockville Centre Diocesan Mission in El Cercado, Dominican Republic, which builds and restores homes and schools in the mountain villages around San Jose de Ocoa, visiting and working there several times.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to VAMOS!, an organization he cared deeply about.  VAMOS! helps the poor in and around the city of Cuernavaca, Mexico by promoting self-help development and offering nutrition, education, medical, dental services as well as a mobile computer project for teens.  Jack was a Board Member, and traveled there several time to participate in various projects.  At Christmastime, instead of giving gifts to family members, who truthfully did not need more stuff, he would make donations to people in need in Cuernavaca.  Please send donations to:   vamosinmexico.org
