John Joseph Ferner, of Seaford, New York, passed away on February 6, 2026, at his home, with his family by his side.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, John built a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and deep pride in everything he did. He spent 26 years with the New York City Department of Sanitation, where he rose through the ranks and retired as a District Superintendent. His career reflected his commitment, leadership, and strong sense of responsibility.

After retiring, John continued to work for nearly a decade as a school bus driver with WE Transport on Long Island, a role he took great pride in and one that allowed him to stay connected to his community.

John knew how to enjoy life. He loved golfing with his buddies, playing cornhole, and cheering on the New York Yankees. Known to many as “Johnny Softball,” he also played basketball and was part of a close-knit group of friends affectionately known as the Rat Pack. He had a need for speed behind the wheel of his Chevy Impala SS and never missed an episode of Jeopardy!, often counting down the minutes each evening.

Music was a constant presence in John’s life. His tastes were wide-ranging and unapologetic, spanning rock, rap, opera, and even the Pitch Perfect soundtrack. He also appreciated life’s simple pleasures, including a perfectly brewed cup of Peet’s coffee or a well-made espresso martini.

Above all, John was devoted to his family. He followed his son’s football coaching career with pride and excitement and was looking forward to becoming a grandfather. He was known for his sense of humor, his heart of gold, and his ability to make time for everyone. John had a rare gift for connection, and the impact he had on those around him will be felt for years to come.

John is survived by his loving wife, Christine; his son, Thomas; his daughter, Hannah; his daughter-in-law, Brianna; his bonus children, John (Christina), Samantha (Cody), and Isabella; his brother, Robert (Grace); his sister, Theresa (David); his nephews and nieces, Michael (Shirley), Timothy (Haley), Matthew, Nina (Michael); his great-niece Aysa and great-nephews Milo and Walker; and his loyal dog and best friend, Noelle.
