John D. Chase
August 21, 1923 – March 24, 2012
John D. Chase, of Seaford, left our world to be with the love of his life, Helen, on March 24, 2012. He passed away peacefully at South Nassau Communities Hospital, surrounded by loved ones. He was 88.
A first generation American, John was born on August 21, 1923; the son of Cyril and Chloe Chase. Raised in Brooklyn, NY; he graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, and immediately joined the other heroes of his generation in the fight to save Europe and the Pacific during World War II. He joined the US Army Air Corps, and performed his duties as a B-24 bomber tail gunner in the 8th Air Force, 453rd Bomber Group, headquartered in England. He flew thirty-five missions over Germany, Belgium, France, and The Netherlands. For his achievement and heroism he was awarded the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Shortly after returning from Europe he married his childhood sweetheart, Helen Lynch. He began his professional career as an architectural draftsman, and went on to attend Pratt Institute and gain his license in Architecture. He moved with his young family from Brooklyn to Seaford in 1958. Among his many business achievements was directing the design and transition of the New York Stock Exchange trading floor to the computerized floor in use today. He worked for the New York Stock Exchange for over twenty years, retiring in 1985.
John loved everything about the outdoors. He particularly enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling, and did so whenever he could. Camping and traveling were frequent vacations as a young family, and he continued his travels throughout retirement. He enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren, and despite some of them being far away, got to see grandchildren’s concerts and athletic events whenever he could. He would drive to Florida every spring to enjoy the gulf coast and visit with old friends who’d retired there; only stopping that tradition last year.
John’s legacy will live on and never be forgotten by his family - his daughter Margaret Steele of Dix Hills, NY and sons John of Shrewsbury, MA and Glenn of Latham, NY; as well as Margaret’s husband Andrew and children Amanda and Meaghan; John’s wife Donna and their children Matthew and his fiancé, Arienne Valliere, and Erica and her husband, Matthew Garrick; and Glenn’s long-time partner Sharon Russell and his children MacKenzie, Hunter, and Cameron. John was predeceased by his brother Dunbar and sister Marguerite.
Calling hours will be on Monday, March 26, from 2:00PM until 4:00PM and from 7:00PM until 9:00PM. A service will be held on Tuesday morning, March 27, upon his arrival at Saint John’s Cemetery, Queens, NY.
Please honor John by donating in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project. Information can be found at the funeral parlor, or by visiting www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
