Gunveig Ellen Margaretha Grannas, 100, passed into eternal life on May 9, 2026. She was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1925. She is survived by her children: Eric (married to Sue) and Susan; her grandchildren: Christi (married to Shannon), Patrick (married to Theresa), and Tim; and her great-grandchildren: Abbey, Becka, Kaiden and Caroline. She was married for 69 years to her husband, Thure, until his passing in 2019.
Gunveig survived WWII, notably having to dodge bombs while running home from school and being evacuated to Denmark alone with her cousin when it was no longer safe for children in Helsinki. As a young adult, she worked for Columbia Pictures as a bookkeeper but also had the job of watching movies to determine if the subtitles were correct. She loved dancing and was a Scandinavian folk dancer and met her future husband when dancing.
Gunveig and Thure were married in 1950 in Finland and four days after their wedding, Thure left for America due to his work. Gunveig followed four months later, alone, on a freightliner ship. Originally residing in New York City, they settled in Seaford in 1960. They also enjoyed time spent at Lake Wallenpaupack, PA and Ft. Myers, FL.
Gunveig excelled at knitting, crochet, embroidery, needlepoint and sewing. She always made family gatherings special and loved to be a part of whatever was going on, even when her body was no longer cooperating. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family.
