Eugene J. Roberti

ROBERTI - Eugene J. (born 5/1/1930), of Seaford, NY, passed away peacefully on 2/8/2020.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Lucy, and his cherished family; children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who rejoice in his reunion with his two sons, Kenneth and Roy, who predeceased him.

As a graduate of Iona College and former basketball star, he was employed by Shell Oil as an accountant, playing amateur softball and in '76, was inducted into the Amateur Softball Association of America Hall of Fame.  He rejoined his former coach at Iona, Jim McDermott, taking the dual positions of baseball coach and assistance basketball coach.  While coaching baseball at Iona College, the NY Times announced that Gene was elected president of the Metropolitan College Baseball Conference.  He later became Iona's head basketball coach and in 2012, in recognition for his distinguished contributions to the college and the sport, was inducted into the Iona Goal Club.  Later in his career he was the basketball coach at St. Francis College and went on to coach golf at NYU.  In the spirit of community he shared his professional coaching skills with the little leaguers of Seaford and is remembered fondly.

Most notably, he was a quiet, unassuming, selfless man who gave to all in need, so think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched...for nothing loved is ever lost and he was loved so much.

Reposing Thursday, February 13, 2020, 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home Inc., 3863 Merrick Rd., Seaford, NY. (2 Traffic Lts. East of Rte. 135). Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, February 14, 2020, 10:45 AM at St. William the Abbot R.C. Church.  Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Queens, NY.
