Eugene V. "Gene" Cahill

March 9, 1931 — January 25, 2018

Eugene (“Gene”) V. Cahill was born March 9, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY. He passed away in East Meadow, NY on January 25, 2018. Gene attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. He then enlisted in the Navy and served as a communications technician, stationed in Adak, in the Aleutian Islands. Gene returned to New York and worked a variety of jobs around New York City, while he was earning a degree in History at New York University - name a New York street and he either had a job or an apartment there. He then attended St. John’s University, earning a master’s degree in Library Science. It was at St. John’s where he met Ann Shaw, his future wife with whom he would spend the next 52 years. Gene spent 31 years as a librarian and branch manager at several libraries in Queens, retiring in 1994. On some of his days off, he drove a limousine or worked at a funeral home, but most of his free time was spent with the family. On May 29, 2017, Gene celebrated his 52nd wedding anniversary with the love of his life, Ann. He is survived by his wife, their 3 children, Maureen Campisano (and her husband, Don), Theresa Agostinelli (and her husband, Dan) and Brendan Cahill (and his wife Marybeth), and 6 grandchildren, Julia, Hope, Mara, Natalie, Emily and Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis J. Cahill and Katharine A. Cahill, his brother, Frank Cahill, and sister, Patricia Cambria.
Gene loved being a librarian and always brought home plenty of books to read. When the children were young, he would take his family on long road trips every Labor Day weekend, usually to the Amish country. As the children got older, his love of history took them to Washington D.C., Jamestown and Williamsburg. He also liked to go on bike rides, often accompanied by his children, and was great at the grill when the family had company in the summer. He loved taking trips down to Jones Beach to sit by the water, regardless of the weather. For St. Patrick's Day, he often made delicious Irish soda bread. He was also a big fan of peanut butter, any day of the week. He loved being with people and, like his brother Frank, had a real Irish sense of humor. Sometimes it was hard to tell if he was being funny or serious. Gene loved to watch the History Channel and was a fan of books about military ships and planes. Whenever one of the kids would discuss their travels, he wouldn't ask 'what airline are you taking' but 'what type of plane did you take?' He knew them all. He was a kind and caring man and will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. We are sure Gene is up in heaven, making sure everyone has a drink and something to eat. Rest in peace, my friend. Gene will be reposing Friday 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home, 3863 Merrick Rd., Seaford (2 Traffic Lts. East of Rte. 135). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 3 at 9:15 am at St. William the Abbot in Seaford, followed by Internment at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Eugene V. Cahill to either the Alzheimer's Foundation of America at www.alzfdn.org or the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation at www.alzinfo.org.
