Carole Marie Gerrity, 87, of Syosset, NY passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025. Born in Scranton, PA on July 28, 1938 to Daniel Gerrity and Ann O’Malley, the family moved to Brooklyn, NY five years later.
Though she was a self-proclaimed kindergarten dropout, she did continue with her education first at St. Vincent Ferrer and then at Catherine Macauley High School before going to Molloy College where she was in the second ever graduating class of 1960. She received a Bachelor of Science degree and in the years following earned two masters degrees. A lifelong educator, she taught in Queens, Connecticut, England for a year, St. Vincent Ferrer, and ultimately landed on her lifelong career at Molloy where she was a professor of education and earned more awards, honors, and accolades than there is room to write!
Her love of horses started in Brooklyn and continued when she moved to Long Island. She was the founder of the Molloy College Equestrian Team in 1973. She retired in 2020 having the longest tenure of any Intercollegiate Horse Show Association coach and was the recipient of the first Coach of the Year Award in 1980.
Carole was a devout Catholic who served as a Eucharistic Minister and taught religious education for years at St. Edward’s.
She was the only remaining member of her family and was the youngest of five children: sisters Joan Whelchel and Delcina Macri, and brothers Daniel and Thomas.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who adored her and whom she adored.
She will always be remembered as a beloved and devoted daughter, sister, aunt, “Grania,”colleague, coach, neighbor, and friend. And those of us who were lucky enough to know her and love her will never forget her passion for history, her staunch political views, her love of the NY Mets, her snarky sense of humor, and her fiery personality.
In honor of Carole a scholarship fund has been established. Information will be shared shortly on how to contribute.
Carole's life will be celebrated on Monday, January 5th, 2026 from 4-7 PM
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 6th, 2026 at 11:00 AM
St. Edward the Confessor RC Church, 205 Jackson Avenue, Syosset, NY.
